Wakesurfing is a water sport where the rider follows the wave created by a specially designed motorboat. At the start, a tow rope is used, but once up and riding, the surfer can let go of the rope and continue surfing the wave behind the boat — similar to ocean surfing.
Wakesurfers use special boards similar to surfboards, but smaller and without bindings.
Wakesurfing dates back to the 1950s–60s, when ocean surfers began riding behind motorboats using their surfboards. The sport regained popularity later, emerging from the shadow thanks to the growing popularity of wakeboarding.
Wakeboards are attached to the rider’s feet with boot-style bindings, and the rider holds onto the tow rope throughout the entire ride.
In wakesurfing, the rider stands freely on the board (no bindings) and lets go of the rope, riding purely on the wave created by the boat.
Wakesurfing is generally easier and less risky because:
Not every boat is suitable for wakesurfing.
First, since the rider is very close to the back of the boat, only boats with an inboard engine (with the propeller underneath the boat) are safe.
Second, the boat must be capable of creating a large, well-shaped wave. That’s why wakesurf boats are equipped with ballast systems and wave-shaping devices — like our MasterCraft X2.
Getting up on a wakesurf board is not difficult, but it doesn’t depend only on the rider. A good boat driver and instructor are just as important.
Even though wakesurfing is relatively new in Latvia, AAC instructors will guide you through everything you need to know for a successful start!
